what does the desert smell like?

Much of my art practice is about doing online text searches related to the sense of smell, seeing how relationships develop. I was told recently that men tend to just put in key words for searches; whereas, I put in the entire phrase::

  • I think of it as like a grass — maybe not a hay smell, but similar to that  
  • They were at the foot of the spectacular Grand Wash Cliffs and covered with Joshua Trees in bloom. The blooms smell like hot wax 
  • It is often said that “the desert smells like rain,” and the smell of the creosote when it rains makes this so.
  • Ponderosa Pine trees smell like vanilla and are related to the Jeffery Pine that smells like butterscotch
  • The air smells like warm rocks.
